Today we went to the northern part of Holland. There was also a place famous for windmills called Zaanse Schans. We took off from the station Koog Zaandijk. Walking for around 20 minutes, we arrived at a pier and took a ferry there.
When we were waiting for the ferry, a man here the pier helped raised the flag to let the driver know there was someone waiting. SO funny.
There are still a number of working windmills there for pressing oil, to saw wood, to grind dyes or to make paper. Comparing to Kinderdijk, the windmills here are more colorful and appealing. And there are many small villa and houses as background, making it a very nice picture. And you can also get into the windmills for a small fee.
In fact, we dated Vivien and Natasha for the windmills. But they took the wrong train. Due to time limit, they just stayed at Amsterdam. We met them afterwards for dinner! And also go for the Red Light District. This is my first time to go to the district. It is so interesting. In the Red Light District. there are shops for erotic toys, bars, restaurants and of course rooms for the prostitutes. They are standing at the window dancing, inducing people to get into the room.

The Day before the Day of Peace

21 September is the Day of Peace, which promote a peaceful, no-war environment for all the human beings in the world. Den Haag, as a base for many United Nations organizations, will organize a number of activities for that.
From website,
Established by a United Nations resolution in 1982, the international Day of Peace is an annual day when individuals, communities, nations and governments worldwide highlight the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace.
Today, right before the Day of Peace, there was an open day for many of these organizations, which provided guided tour for visitors. Jackyand me (again) could not miss this opportunities to go and have a look. We visited three organizations in total:
1. The International Criminal Court
2. The European Patent Office
3. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons
4. The Peace Palace (passed through and took one photo. Too many people=. =)

I like the International Court most. The court is used when the local court of member states cannot exercise judicial power to penalize the bad. The court can involve in criminal cases like genocide, cases against humanity, war crimes etc. The Court is not under United Nations nor any government. So it is an independent organizaiton. It also adopt various kinds of methods to protect the witnesses, in case they don't want to be known.
The second stop was The Organizaiton for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
What I remeber the most is the picture in the conference room. There is a name "Iper" This is the first time in human history a chemical weapon is used, causing great causalties.

The final distination was the European Patent Office. Nothing really special. But finally, a foreign girl came sunddenly and took a photo with me.

Trip to Utrecht
After Amsterdam and Rotterdam, today Jacky and me visited the third city in Holland--Utrecht. This is not a big city but it is very nice. It took us around 1 hour to go from Rotterdam to Utrecht Central station. Unlike Rotterdam, Utrecht is a historical city with a lot of rivers.
One of the most famous spot there is the Cathedral. It was a very tall building at the city centre. So you will neve get lost becasue the Cathedral is always a landmark for you to determine your position. Our next stop was the National Museum van Speelklok tot Pierement. There were vaious kinds of muscial boxes, which you can touch them and even play them. When we got there, there was a guide tour for the museum. Of course, we joined it for sure. We came across a lot of funny musical boxes.
For this one, there was a piano at the bottom. At top, there were a number of violins to help perfrom the song. Don't think it was not moving at all. We really saw it playing a song. I will share some videos with you through facebook.
This is not a rabbit. This is a rabbit music box. And the rabbit will move when music plays.
Then we went to Aboriginal Art Museum. Do you know what the name means? We didn't know so we asked the officer there. In fact, this is a museum about the culture of the original inhabitants in Australia. The native people there do not speak a language. They only inherit songs from their ancestors. By paintings, they can express their ideas. With the colonization of Australia, the culture of these inhabitants mixes up with the British. They start to use more colors in their drawings.
Finally, we went to the Het Spoorwemuseum. This is about trains. You can really get up the trains there. I think all the museums here in Utrecht are quite interesting and worth visiting. All these museums can be admitted by the museum card! So it does not cost you anything. So good.Tommorow, I am going to Den Haag. There will be the Day of Peace there.

Rotterdam and me

All are coincidence. I suddenly discovered there were some linkages between Rotterdam and me. On 14th May 1940, Rotterdam was bombarded by the German airoplanes and a lot of buildings fell down. It was the lowest period of Rotterdam, which at the same time implies a new modern city to emerge. 14th May is the birthday of modern Rotterdam and also me!
Why I know this? It is just becasue I visited the Historisch Museum, Rotterdam. There are cute exhibitions as well as exibition about the history of Rotterdam.

So lucikiy, I got my ING bank card. The next step is to wait for the pincode letter. Then hopefull, I will be able to transfer mmy money to this account in next months! Everything is going better now!

Dutch is different from HKnese
When you come here for a month, you will finally discover that people in Hong Kong are really efficicent. I just came across a number of incidents which were not pleasant at all.
When I first came here and visited the housing company, they were slow in handling cases. And they were not friendly at all.
I got into the room, thinking everything was fine. Then I discovered that there was no Internet in my room. I reported to the student manager and gradually the building manager. I went to the building company to complaint about it. Finally, I got the problem fixed after nearly 3 weeks by switching room to the campus.
I applied for the ATM card from ING bank on 31 Aug. But I did not manage to get it today. Now it is already 16 Sep. And you need to wait for the monthly statement after a week or so to get the switch code for transferring money from HK to here.I also doscoveredd very interesting thing! The ING bank is also a post office. So strange.
They do things slow. We do things fast.
Maybe that's something we called a part of cultural shock. We preceive/ value time differently. There is a very good Chinese proverbs "皇帝唔急太監急".
Hope everything is fine.

Belgium Trip
The waffle is really good. Don't miss it.Manneken Pis (help·info) (Dutch for little man urinating), also known in French as the petit Julien, is a famous Brussels landmark. It is a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain's basin.
I think this story about the pissing kid is the most interesting one.In the 14th century, Brussels was under siege by a foreign power. The city had held its ground for some time, so the attackers conceived of a plan to place explosive charges at the city walls. A little boy named Juliaanske happened to be spying on them as they were preparing. He urinated on the burning fuse and thus saved the city. There was at the time (middle of the 15th century, perhaps as early as 1388) a similar statue made of stone. The statue was stolen several times. In 1619 it was replaced by the current bronze statue, created by Franco-Flemish Baroque sculptor Jerome Duquesnoy, father of the more famous François.

Going to Belgium and Kinderdijk
I went to Belgium last week. There are a lot of historial buildings there. The churches and Catherdrals are beautiful. I tried the chocolate and Waffle there. I think the waffle is extremely good. However, a large part of my waffle fell to the ground..>.<
I also discovered very interesting things in Netherlands. I think Hong Kong people do not see this kind of chocolate before.
As there is no internet in my house , I am now moving to a new flat in university. Finally I will have internet soon. That's really amazing news. I just felt extremely homesick when I first came here without any ways to contact back home!
Yesterday, we went to the famouse UN registered cultureal site - Kinderdijk.
We first took the metro to Zuidplein and then the bus number 90 to there.
There are totally 19 well-preserved windmills, which were originally used for bumping the excessive water out into the river.
We also took a ship travelling on the river. (only 2.5 EURO) At night, the lights of the windmills were turned on. That was quite beautiful. But as it was too dark, I did not take any photos.
